BTEC in Driving Science
The a²om BTEC is founded on a simple but compelling goal: to teach people to be safe drivers for life, and thus save young lives. Driving statistics tell us that 17-24 year old drivers are seriously over represented in accidents that have caused death and serious injury. The a²om BTEC in Driving Science provides a comprehensive novice driver programme, which results in a more-fully informed driver with a full appreciation of the factors that influence safety. The BTEC is delivered through practical driving lessons, but the e-learning suite can be accessed in the classroom in conjunction with PHSE/general studies courses.
Accredited by EdExcel and equivalent to a GCSE Level, the a²om BTEC in Driving Science is the world’s first academic qualification in novice driver training and your chance to be a pioneer in revolutionising young driver training. With 1 in 5 novice drivers having an accident in their first year of driving, a 21st century curriculum isn’t complete without some sort of driver education.
The a²om BTEC is done in-car and in the classroom. It follows the a²om driving curriculum, encompassing the European Goals for Driving Education, which is the most thorough novice driver programme in the UK.
-
What is a BTEC?
A BTEC Intermediate Award in Driving Science which is an equivalent to a GCSE. It is accredited by EdExcel who will verify the quality of the course and its delivery. -
Is it a course or do I have to do a test?
The BTEC is a course that ends with a qualification, so there has to be some form of assessment. Remember, before giving you a discount, insurers will want to know that you’ve learnt to drive to an advanced standard. At the end of each unit you must be able to complete two tasks, on topics covered already. They could be in-car with your instructor, or online. -
Why is the BTEC necessary?
1 in 5 new drivers will crash within a year of passing their test. The BTEC in Driving Science has been designed to make you a better driver from day 1, so after passing your test you will be above the required standard and safer on the road. -
How does it work?
The BTEC in Driving Science integrates into your normal driving lessons and is aligned with the European Goals for Driver Education. The 5 unit syllabus covers the main aspects of driving and one of the units (including driving at night, motorways and rural roads) must be completed after you have passed your DSA driving test. You will be learning advanced skills in a structured course, so you could be test-ready sooner and more likely to pass first time. -
What are the benefits?
You will receive a structured course and be periodically assessed throughout the learning process to allow you to progress at a pace that is right for you. You can add the qualification to your CV that will not only provide evidence to future employers of your driving ability but may also be something that makes you stands out as a little bit different from the rest. You will also get some motorway experience because this is included in the post-test module giving you added confidence when you have to hit the M-roads alone or with a car full of people. -
How much will it cost me?
It will cost you £175 in addition to the normal cost of your driving lessons. Remember though, post-test elements like motorway and driving at night are included and the financial benefits that come with the qualification should more than cover the cost of the course itself. Insurance companies recognise that by passing the BTEC you will be less likely to make a claim, so they cut the cost of your premium by as much as 50%. If you want to find out how much you could save exactly, email btecinsurance@a2om.com with your insurance details to help you find out. -
How many extra lessons will I need?
Everyone learns at a different pace. Because this course is structured, you may not need more lessons even though there is a module after you have passed your test. You should be better prepared for your test and therefore save money with retests. You will however be expected to access the learning materials in your own time, and complete in car and on line assessments. -
Will it delay my starting to learn to drive?
Not at all. As an instructor accredited by a2om to deliver BTEC driving training I am able to integrate the course elements into normal lessons. -
I am already learning. Can I take the BTEC or is it too late?
No it is not too late. Depending where you are in the learning process you will be assessed and brought into the process at the appropriate place. There will, however, be no reduction in registration fee. -
Do I have to pass my test to qualify for my BTEC?
Yes. Passing the test will allow you to proceed onto unit five of the course. Passing your test is just a part of the process, and as you have had received structured learning you should be better prepared and therefore more likely to pass first time.
